The History of Cottage Hospital

In 1903, Cottage Hospital began operation in what was known as the Cobleigh Tavern, built in 1795 at today's junction of Routes 10 and 135 in Woodsville, New Hampshire.

In 1953, the first set of triplets were born at Cottage Hospital. They were delivered around 7:00 a.m. to Avis Smith. However, all the bassinets in the hospital's nursery were occupied, but there was one small incubator open. The first baby born was put into the incubator, the second was being held by someone, and the third was being put into a bureau drawer. A couple of minutes after the birth, William L. Wilson, Administrator of the Mary Hitchcock Hospital, called to hear of the exciting news. When he was told of the lack of room for the triplets, he informed the nurse that he had already sent out a truck with one large incubator, to be delivered to Cottage Hospital. Mr. Wilson told the nurse that it would arrive at the hospital shortly, where they were to accept the use of the incubator, and to use it free of charge, for as long as they needed it. He told the nurses to inform him if he could be of more assistance. Eventually the triplets went home to a happy, loving mother.

One of the sets of twins born at the new and upcoming Cottage Hospital were the Simmons twin boys. William and Charles Simmons were born at cottage hospital on December 16, 1979 to Richard and Melanie Simmons of Bradford, VT. Cathy Stimson and Bertha Knapp made the twin boys Christmas stocking and caps, to wear for their time in the hospital.

When it became apparent that the Cobleigh Tavern building they had been using for the Cottage Hospital was no longer adequate, the hospital decided a new hospital was necessary. There was thought of building a hospital in North Haverhill, at the nearby Grafton County Home, but the public opinion decided it would be better to have a separate hospital. Through tremendous amounts of fundraising, $600,000.00 was raised for the new hospital. On July 3, 1960 the new hospital was dedicated and put into use. The old hospital was stripped of everything that could still be used, and it went up for sale. After 14 years passing, and still no interested buyers, in 1974, arrangements were made for the Woodsville Fire Department, and others nearby, to burn the building as a training exercise. In 1974, there was also a huge lack of doctors. A sign appeared in Woodsville stating, WE NEED DOCTORS.

Thank you!

A big thank you goes out to all those who made the 23rd annual Walk-A-Thon and Road Race possible this weekend! We ended up having a great turnout with about 65 total runners, speed-walkers and walkers. Because of all our participants and volunteers, we were able to raise a good amount of funds to go toward our community's dental needs. Hope to see you again next year for the 24th annual!

What is Androgen Deficiency in aging males (low-testosterone / low-t)?

What is Androgen Deficiency in aging males (low-testosterone / low-t)?

Androgen deficiency in men means the body has lower than average levels of male hormones – most importantly, testosterone.
This deficiency may be caused by problems in the areas of the brain that control the function of the testes (pituitary gland and hypothalamus)
or by problems in the testes themselves. Treatment involves testosterone replacement therapy.

How do you know if you may be one of the many men affected by low testosterone? Take the test:

What is Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is an involuntary loss / leakage of urine from the bladder. Urinary incontinence can have a variety of causes.
Women experience this condition twice as often as men.

Procedure offered at Cottage Hospital to treat this condition in women:

Urethral Vaginal Sling
There are several options to address incontinence. A consultation with a Urologist will help decide the best option for each individual. One option could be a urethral vaginal sling. This is a surgical procedure done under anesthesia to correct urinary incontinence in females by supporting the urethra (the tube that drains the bladder) with a strong piece of material that acts as a sling. This is a same day procedure that is performed by our Urologist, Dr. Richard Caesar. Recovery times vary.

Fun Facts About Oral Health & Teeth Cleaning!

1. Change your toothbrush every three months. Did you know manual toothbrushes become worn out and are not as effective after three months? Also, be sure to rinse your toothbrush with hot water after every use and change it after you have an episode of flu, cold or other viral infections, otherwise you may risk re-infection.

 2. Don’t drink soda. People who tend to drink three or more glasses of soda daily have 62 percent more tooth decay, fillings and tooth loss than those who do not drink it at all.

3. Brushing harder is not better. Vigorous brushing does more harm than good and can lead to eroded enamel, which never grows back and can cause sensitivity and other oral issues.

4. When traveling, don’t cap your toothbrush. Capping your toothbrush actually can trap moisture and encourage bacterial growth.

5. Keep your toothbrush away from the toilet. It’s no myth – the airborne particles from the flush can travel up to a distance of six feet, so keep your distance to avoid dangerous bacteria.

6. Wonder what your chompers are made of? Teeth are covered with hard enamel called a crown. Inside the tooth is dentin and the pulp of your tooth. Each tooth is attached to your jaw socket and has blood vessels and nerves, which keeps your teeth alive.

What does Anthem’s Health Insurance Exchange Network mean for our Community Hospital?

By Chief Executive Officer-- Maria Ryan, PhD, APRN

I would like to clarify a few points about the introduction of Anthem New Hampshire’s Health Insurance Exchange prospective network and what it means for Cottage Hospital and the community we serve.

o The Anthem Network (known as Pathways) for the Health Care Exchange, a bi-product of the Affordable Care Act, is limited to individuals who are financially eligible and choose to purchase insurance through this program.

o Here is a list, provided by Anthem of who is NOT impacted by the new network:Individual members who bought their plans prior to March 23, 2010 (also called Grandfathered plans) Seniors on Medicare. Employees who receive their health benefits through small group employers. Employees who receive their health benefits through large group employers

It is important to note that Cottage Hospital was never asked to participate in the Anthem Network for this new type of product and was given the explanation by Anthem officials that it was due to our border state location and that the network was determined from a geographic standpoint. In a time when individuals face transportation barriers and access to care issues it seems inconceivable that we would limit their healthcare choices. We take great pride in caring for our New Hampshire and Vermont communities. We make every effort to run an efficient and effective organization to maintain lower healthcare prices.

Cottage has been serving our community for 110 years and while we are saddened by Anthem’s decision to not even ask us to be part of their Individual & Exchange Network, we will continue to work with them, and all insurance carriers, to offer affordable care and put our patients first.
